The Kennebec Journal Morning Sentinal had a story today about this movie that is "a documentary about the repression and renaissance of French culture in New England."
Has anyone seen this? It sounds like something that we all should see/own.
Yes, I own it. I bought it a few years ago. It's a great documentary about being Franco-American's in New England. It's really gave me a better appreciation for what my Grandparents & Parents had to go through. This documentary will not only help people understand what it means to be Franco-American but I think it will give a better insight to anyone who's ancestors were immigrants. If you see the movie you will definitely want to buy it.
Thank you so much for posting this. This seems like a very valuable film. I hope it will be seen by many, especially young people who might not be inclined to read a book about this subject
Un film qui donne toute l'histoire des Franco-Américains est Les Tisserands du Pouvoir ( 3hours long,
in French with English subtitles). Made in 1989. First appeared as a TV miniseries on Québec TV. I own a
a cassette VCR of it. Si quelqu'un veux des informations supplémentaires, prenez le contact avec moi.
Waking Up French is a good film, but focuses on some facets of Maine only. It was shown in several cities in
New England. It was shown in Manchester NH in November 2003, sponsored by Association Canado-Américaine.
I have a copy of "Reveil: Waking Up French." I have had the video for ten years and I have watched it many times. I have also watched "Les Tisserands du Pouvoir" and I think both films are very good. Very few members of my family were born in the United States, and during my childhood, we often went back and forth between Canada and the United States. So, the immigrant experience is not foreign to me.
I have never worked in a mill, but I have many friends and some close family members who know "the mill experience" firsthand. As for the pain and prejudice discussed in "Reveil: Waking Up French", I am well acquainted with some of that as well. I remember being told many times not to speak French because I was in the United States, and I even had a boss who threatened to deport me if I persisted. He didn't win. I still speak French today, and I'm still here! Il ne faut jamais accepter les injustices.
